Cleaning Your Boiler Heating System

Cleaning Your Boiler | Jos. Frederick & Sons | Middletown, DE

As a homeowner, it is important to keep your heating system working properly. Cleaning your boiler is the first step; it can lower your heating costs and extend the lifespan of your system. They are constantly working to heat your home and provide hot water, so grime can build up and clog your pipes and tubes. There are three easy steps you can follow to keep your boiler clean and running efficiently with just a vacuum cleaner, screwdriver set, and cleaning brushes:

Step 1: Turn Off Your Boiler

Locate the main switch and turn off your boiler before you begin cleaning. Wait two to three hours to allow the unit to cool down to prevent burning yourself. Once the boiler has reached a cool temperature, use screwdrivers to remove the front and top cover as well as the vent stack.

Step 2: Scrub the Tubes and Clean the Boiler Unit

Removing the cover and vent stack allows access to clean the tubes in the heat exchanger. Scrub the tubes with your cleaning brushes to remove any soot, dust, or carbon. Use your brush to clean the vent stack as well. Then use clean water to wash the burner tubes and let them dry. Once the burner tubes have dried, use your vacuum to clean the bottom and outside area of the boiler.

Step 3: Reassemble and Restart

Reassemble the pieces of your boiler unit and restart the system, allowing the thermostat to return to its normal temperature. Look for a blue flame, then check that the heating system is working properly.

Additional Maintenance

There are a few things you should check regularly to ensure that your boiler is working efficiently. Ensure that there are no blockages in the air vents and flues that may prevent air from circulating; this can cause an increase in your heating bills. Maintain your boiler’s water level and check for leaks. Clean any hard water and time-scale buildup, as it can result in your boiler struggling to maintain a normal temperature. Lastly, keep your boiler well-lubricated so the parts continue to run smoothly.
