Home Electrical Safety Tips

Everyone wants to keep their families safe. Your home should be your family’s safe haven, so be sure to check that your electrical systems and appliances are functioning properly. Keep the following points in mind to ensure safety in your home:

Cords and Plugs

If you have extension cords in your home, do not use them as permanent fixtures. Rather than having extension cords running in every room, have an electrician install outlets where you need them. Never run extension cords under carpets or over door thresholds and do not overload one outlet with multiple high-wattage or heat-producing devices. Major appliances like washers/dryers, refrigerators, stoves, etc. should be plugged directly into wall outlets. Plugs should fit snugly into outlets.

Heat-producing appliances should be placed away from flammable or combustible goods like paper napkins, potholders, etc. Unplug any kitchen countertop and bathroom appliances, such as toasters or hair dryers/straighteners, when not in use. Keep your kitchen exhaust fan clean of obstructions like grease and lint. If you use portable space heaters in your home, make sure they have a seal of approval from a nationally-recognized testing laboratory. Never use portable heaters in the bathroom.

Extra Safety Considerations

If you do not have them already, consider utilizing tamper-resistant electrical receptacles within your home if you have small children. You can also get arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) installed to shut off the current when dangerous conditions arise. Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) can be installed to help reduce the risk of electric shock by switching off the circuit if it becomes hazardous. AFCIs and GFCIs should be tested at least once a month.

Warning Signs

Call a licensed electrician immediately if you experience any of these warning signs:

  • Feeling a tingling sensation when you touch a plug or light switch
  • Outlet plates that feel warm or are discolored
  • An outlet sparks
  • Your lights dim or flicker
  • Your circuit breaker flips often or fuses blow regularly
  • An appliance has a faint rubbery or burning smell
